How to Organize Sandtray Shelves for Figures

Organizing sandtray figures can seem like a daunting task. Some people set up sandplay sanctuaries in their homes, and since they typically don’t have training in sandplay from the mental health field, they can feel lost and confused about the “right” way to set it up. Even those in the mental health field setting up a sandtray office often feel confused.

I prefer using shelves in width from 4-6 inches. This size allows for me to place objects without things behind them, allowing for an easily visible space where each figure can be seen. Having figures organized in ways that make sense to the psyche is important. For example, try placing dark evil images near one another, and light spiritual images near one another. Keep like things together, such as trees and flowers, or bridges and castles.

The sandplay therapist should keep their shelves age appropriate by having images most used by small children near the floor.

Happy organizing!
